Paul Greengrass' recent cinematic success is that of Captain Phillips. For some reason, this film has not been discussed at all by anyone around here that I know of, except for Mason and I, because we both went to see it. Greengrass is great, but Tom Hanks is who shines.
There is no doubt in my mind that Tom Hanks will be nominated for an oscar this year. Upon originally coming out of the theater I said, "I wouldn't mind Hanks getting a third Oscar." Now I can't exactly say the same since I've seen 12 Years a Slave, but he's nothing less than second on my list for favorite 2013 performances. On screen, Hanks is extremely convincing as a ship captain. He's stern, intelligent, and professional throughout the entire film. Once the pirates board the ship, nothing changes about his character. A tad bit more tense, but nothing else. He's believable in every sense through his mannerisms, slight accent, familiarity with occupation, and dedication to his wife. I forgot it was Hanks. If that wasn't enough, he conquers the feeling of shock later in the film better than I have ever seen on screen. Tom Hanks cranks out another Oscar worthy performance at 57, nearly twenty years since his last oscar. A true actor in every sense.
