Yojimbo
(Once again, there
will be spoilers)
Literally, the title means, The Body Guard, and I think the
title followed the movie rather well. For those who did not go and see this at
signs and wonders, it’s a Kurosawa film about a lone samurai who comes across a
town with two rival gangs, one a split off of the other. The nameless samurai
(he goes by Kuwabatake Sanjuro, which means 30 year old mulberry field, because
that is what he saw when asked for his name) plays both gangs off of each other,
gaining favor and wealth from each, until all of them end up dead.
Something that I noticed played through most of the film,
was real skill VS raw power. Sanjuro had trained with the sword for who knows
how many years, he was extremely good with the blade. Unosuke used an old
pistol, and while he did have really good aim, he relied too much on the very
fact that he had a gun, rather than his own skill in that weapon. Though I must
question the sanity of Sanjuro at the end, when he give the dying Unosuke his
pistol…while standing right next to him…and he had to know it was loaded… but
he gets away with it, as he keeps his life.
