Once Upon A Time...

I’m not really sure if this would be considered a good blog but I am going for it any way. Back in 2011, a new TV series started on channel 21 around 8pm on Sunday. I think my family only started watching it because we were looking for something to watch (I originally wasn’t one of the people watching but then got hooked). Once Upon a Time tells the story of fairy tale characters being transported to the real world through a curse by the Evil Queen, Regina. No one has any memories of their former lives and people cannot enter or leave Storybrooke.
L to R: David (Prince Charming)
Mary Margaret (Snow White)
Emma Swan (Snow White's daughter)
Regina (Evil Queen)
To be honest, I had my doubts about this new series, particularly because it did have fairy tale characters and creatures as main characters (kind of over used). However, it was surprisingly complicated. One episode switched between what was happening in the real world and a corresponding situation in fantasy world from the past, usually depending on the character that is focused on. Because of this, it was never a good idea to enter into the show late (I spent the majority of the episode trying to explain what was going on to my parents who showed up late one day – during commercials of course). But it was these complications that appealed to me. It was interesting to see surprising twists to old established fairy tales and that each was connected to the other. You had to pay attention in order to completely follow what was going on.
An example of this is that Regina, the evil queen, her mother was the Miller’s daughter who turned evil because of a situation in her life (became obsessed with power). Regina was not evil to start out with. She was in love with a stable boy even though her mother wanted her to marry Snow White’s father (Regina had saved Snow White). Snow White found out about Regina’s secret love and promised not to tell. Regina’s mother tricked Snow White into telling her (the “mother” wanted to be with her “daughter) and then ripped the heart out of the stable boy. Snow White told Regina what she did (very happy about it because now mother and daughter could be happy because Regina’s mother was supposedly going to let Regina be with her love). And that is why Regina hates Snow White. Oh, and as a final side note, Regina’s mother was the one who poisoned Snow White’s mother.
