“Little Dog
Turpie:” should it be shown to children? Personally, I do not know if this
should be shown to children. It depends on what they are exposed too. I mean,
sure the story conveys a simple idea there isn’t anything wrong with it. The
stark contrast of the art gave me the creeps (made it seem darker). Also,
compared to the songs and fairytales that are read to children, “Little Dog
Turpie” follows at the same level as them.
I guess my
problem is when children are forced to watch what they were taught and prefer
not to. There are some, like me, that are very impressionable; any image that I
see stays with me. I knew this as a child and for this reason I never had the
urge to watch anything that was scary or disturbing. Combine images with a
little paranoia and it can get real interesting (bad imagination). Normally I
can filter what I watch, testing the waters but quickly retreating. However,
when someone, like teachers at school did sometimes, “forces” (either watch the
show and not have to do any extra work or not watch had have a packet of
worksheets for a grade that the rest of the students don’t have to do) to watch
shows that I know that I do not like (extreme violence, head chopping, etc.).
Also, the more that I watch these, the more insensitive that I am: it just adds
extra confusion to an already hectic life (sometimes just fuels the idea that
if feelings are shut down or locked up then everything is okay).
At least college helps because there is more freedom (after some more thought, "Little Dog Turpie" isn't so bad - I was more or less surprised by the artwork).
