Tomb Raider (2013)

One of the few of my favorite games is the latest Tomb Raider game (released in April 2013), which is a reboot of the original Tomb Raider games that were released from 1996-2003. While I’ve never personally played the old games, I’ve seen some gameplay and read reviews. I became interested in the latest Tomb Raider when I stumbled across a fan art contest for the game on DeviantArt. I really liked the idea of a strong female protagonist (which you rarely get in games), and I decided to buy it. I finished the game within a week and absolutely adored it! The graphics and scenery were beautiful. The main character was also fantastic and three dimensional. So what’s the story?

Well, the main character of this story is Lara Croft, and she is young, ambitious archeologist. The game begins with her and a crew heading out on the ship Endurance to find the lost kingdom of Yamatai. Based upon her theories, the team heads into the Dragon’s Triangle, which is east of Japan, much to Dr. Whitman’s anger (he is a celebrity archeologist on the crew). However, as they enter, a raging storm tears apart the boat, leaving the survivors on a strange, isolated island. There, Lara discovers a violent cult of criminals known as the Solarii Brotherhood, and their entire society is based on the legend of Himiko, the queen that once ruled Yamatai. Lara must fight and survive as she unveils the truth about the mysterious island and its secrets.

The story of the game was quite engaging, and I enjoyed finding bits and pieces of the history of the island through artifacts. The controls were nice and easy. I also enjoyed the fact that I could fight with a variety of weapons such as a bow, shotgun, pistol, or rifle. However, the best part of the game for me was Lara Croft herself. She was such an interesting, deep character that I actually cared about the entire game. It’s very refreshing to find a good female lead in the gaming industry. If you haven’t played this videogame yet, I highly suggest it!
