How to Train Your Dragon Review

So, a few days ago, I decided to watch How to Train Your Dragon, because I hadn't seen the entire movie before, only the middle/ending. And I am so glad I chose to watch it! How to Train Your Dragon is by far, the best movie that DreamWorks has ever produced. The characters were fantastic, and even though the plotline is slightly cliche, the way the story was approached and handled made it feel like the idea of a young person and their pet was a brand new concept. So, what's so great about this movie? Well, there's a lot of things that made me love it. One of those things is the animation. I really enjoyed the style of the characters, and how each one looked unique. The best animation out of the whole movie is the flight scenes. They are absolutely magnificent! The angles give the scenes such power and beauty. You actually feel like you're flying with Hiccup and Toothless. It is breathtaking!

Something else I really enjoyed is the characters. In kids movies, very rarely do you get characters with depth and realism. And How to Train Your Dragon is one of those rarities. Hiccup is a very relatable character as he struggles to be something he’s not. He wants to be a true Viking, which, by his village’s standards, is a strong, dragon-killing warrior. However, his talents lie elsewhere as he is brilliant at building and figuring things out. He is very analytical and patient. And this is shown through his relationship with Toothless, the night fury. At the beginning, Hiccup must keep his distance from the dragon, slowly allowing trust between the two. As they begin to bond, he discovers the weaknesses and dislikes of dragons. He uses his newfound knowledge to defeat dragons in a non-violent, peaceful way as he is enrolled in his Viking training. This tricks his village and fellow students into thinking he's some sort of dragon conqueror. Speaking of the other students, the side characters in this movie are great as well. They are each different and fun to watch, along with the dragons they get later.

I also really loved the fact that all the dragons were each different in appearances and power. The movie took the time to introduce us to several species through the Viking dragon training, which is also something the movie did right. The pacing of the story was perfect and kept me interesed the whole time. The ending of the movie was great too. The fact that they made Hiccup and Toothless "equal" by the end through their loss of an important part of them was brilliant! How to Train Your Dragon was an excellent film, and I highly reccommend it! I can't wait for the second movie, which will be released in 2014. There is already  trailer up for it, and if you've already seen the first movie, you should go check out the trailer on YouTube!
