The Pet Girl of Sakurasou

In anime that belong to romance/comedy/harem/etc there is always a lack of realism. The plot often works out just perfectly for the hero/heroine, or events coincide to make miracles happen that leave the viewer with a warm yet superficial feeling.

Sakurasou no Pet na Kanojo (or The Pet Girl of  Sakurasou) attempts to remove that fake image of the lead guy getting though clutch situations and living a "happily ever after ending". On the surface this series looks like yet another rom-com with plenty of sexual innuendos, fan service, typical clod-brain male lead and clueless female lead that will leave you perhaps laughing but nothing really substantial.

However, this is that "don't judge a book by its cover" series.

Sakurasou, while containing the elements that make it a rom-com, brings an element of realism and true "slice of life" and weaves it into a nice drama that leaves the viewer with a relatable experience.

Failure and insecure feelings of inferiority are common in everyone, and while they are inevitable, they mold character and develop personality. On the surface, Kanda Sorata is your typical rom-com male lead who tries to stay sane in the middle of company that are both talented and "wacky" for lack of a better term. However, as the anime progresses, you get to see how his failures and experiences of dealing with his feelings of inferiority toward Mashiro shape him into an adult. This theme spreads to Jin and Nanami as they too deal with the gap in talent and trying to cope with their limited abilities with hard work and dedication.

Of course, while the serious side is portrayed in a very nice way, the comedic aspects are in no way overshadowed nor diminished. If you're in any way a fan of the rom-com genre, Sakurasou won't let you down in terms of the quality of comedy.

If you're looking for something that won't leave you empty with decent storytelling, relatively nice pacing, yet will make you laugh and (maybe) tear up a little, Sakurasou is a solid choice.
