Supernatural

OK! on the CW on October 8th at 9 o'clock "Supernatural" season 9 premiered. I've been a strong fan of the show for a long time and still enjoy it even though it has its ups and downs.

The show was originally about two brothers that traveled the country side killing whatever supernatural creature crossed there path while they looked for there missing father, who was looking for the demon that killed their mother.

Now it focuses more on the apocalypse and them trying to save the world from damnation.

They introduced angels into the show and even discussed the idea of God. They even had Satan as regular appearing character.

I watched the show for so long because it's interesting to see how Hollywood bends the bible and scripture to make an dramatic and eye catching show. They have read scripture on screen, talked about the dangers of possession and how Satan is to be taken seriously.
But on the other hand they make God and the angels to look like the bad guys....why?

As a christian, it makes me nervous that people are actually taking the show as fact about Christianity, that God is some old guy in the sky with a smite button just waiting for us to make a mistake or that he actually doesn't care about us at all. The show doesn't just do that to Christianity either, its to different mythologies and other religions like Buddhism and Muslim beliefs.

Should Hollywood continue this way by twisting information like this or keeping using it for entertainment purposes.... hmmm

  1. I am a big fan of the show as well and am glad that you blogged about Supernatural and about Hollywood's take on the Bible and Christianity. I obviously disagree with some elements of the whole Christian mythology.

Anyway, I do see how Supernatural portrays God and the angels as selfish and that they do not care about anyone else. But I have to admit that the one thing that they get right about the angels is that they are powerful and awesome! But of course their actions aren't always righteous or what God's will is. At this part in the show I start drawing the lines at what is actually scripturally true and valid and what is Hollywood jargon.

I do enjoy the little allusions to what happened in history and in the Old Testament such as what Naomi said about killing the 1st borns in Egypt during the passover. I also love how Dean, Sam, Castiel, and Bobby single handedly stopped the apocalypse and the end of the world. It shows how God can use ordinary people to do great things. That really hit home for me when Dean found out the he was Michael's vessel (yes the archangel) and Dean says something along the lines of "What does God want with me?". Dean felt worthless and being told that the God of the universe wants to be involved in his life makes him angry and confused because Dean feels that he isn't worth it. I love that! And I think that we can all relate to that in a way. We are all sinners and not worthy of anything yet God deems us worthy and loves us.

Well that is the end of my little rant! But seriously I love watching Supernatural so I highly recommend it!
