I really
enjoyed the Pixar section we covered in class because I’ve grown up with those
films and loved everyone. So I chose to blog about Geri’s Game. I’ve loved this
short ever since I saw it the first time opening for A Bug’s Life. It’s my
favorite Pixar short. Geri is so happy and content playing chess with himself,
which, for me, makes the short both funny and sad. He them proceeds to trick
his “opponent”, who is beating him at the game, and ends up winning the chess
game and his dentures back, which I find comical. In class and in the reading
for the Pixar section it talked about Pixar not being great because of the
story, but because of the telling of the story. Geri’s Game is such a simple
story, but I believe, Pixar captures the telling of the story perfectly. Geri
is a lonely man and copes with his loneliness by challenging himself to a game
of chess. He does something that makes him happy, rather than feeling sorry for
himself. I think that at some point in our lives we have all felt a bit lonely,
which makes this Pixar story relatable for everyone.
