Adam and Dog

“Adam and Dog” by Minkyu Lee is a beautiful film that is about the relationship between the first man and dog and is viewed through the dog’s point of view. This film was nominated for Best Animated Short Film (along with the infamous short “Paperman”) for the 85th Academy Awards and won Best Animated Short Subject at the 39th Annie Awards.

I won’t summarize this film when you can just watch it right here, so watch it!

Instead, I will give my analysis/thoughts about “Adam and Dog”.

Thoughts:

-This film is utterly breathtaking! The animation style is smooth and incredibly detailed.

  • The way that the artists used lighting and color really set the mood for what was happening.
    • For example: Once Adam and Eve had sinned all the colors were less saturated.

Analysis:
As this story is told through the dog’s point of view, the viewer is not explicitly told when Adam and Eve sinned but it is implied when the jaguar kills a rabbit and when Adam and Eve run with clothes on.

The relationship between Adam and Dog reminds me a little of what we have with God.
Now I am not saying that God is a dog - not in the slightest! But God is similar only in that God will always love us and never forsake us - no matter what. At the end when Adam and Eve leave Eden, Dog leaves Eden as well. This paints a beautiful picture about how Jesus left paradise and came to us to save us from our sin and give us hope. I feel that this film not only tells a beautiful story but also illustrates who God is: God is just and perfect and can therefore not be associated with sin, He is also our strength and hope - much how like Dog was at the end, and God gave up his only son to live with us in an imperfect world. Overall, “Adam and Dog” is a beautiful and breathtaking film to watch not only as a non-believer but also as a Christian.

  1. Great film! I'm really glad you shared it so I could discover it. Loved the animation, it was great, and I'm kind of a sucker for dialogue-less stories, and this story was done brilliantly.
