The Way, Way Back is a
coming of age film from this past year. It follows a 14 year old boy
(Duncan) on summer vacation with his mom and her boyfriend. The
boyfriend is a jerk to him and his mom never really sees it. The
boyfriends daughter is also there and tries her best to exclude him
and make him feel alienated. On top of all of this, Duncan is very
awkward.
He sneaks away to be on his
own and ends up running into a man that runs a local water park. They
have a connection and he offers him a job. He works there all summer
and sees the water park as his real home and sees the man as his
father. The manager of the water park is nice to him and takes him
under his wing.
The film is one that a lot
can relate to. Feeling left out and like nobody listens to you. Its
the kind of stuff we all went through in our early teenage years.
Movies like this this show
you that you aren't the only one that went through this stuff and it
makes it easy to put yourself in the main characters shoes. Having
gone through some of the same stuff, it makes it that much more
satisfying when things get better at the end.
Its a great movie and I
think its one most could enjoy since its so relatable.
