The YouTube Music Awards

So on Sunday YouTube hosted their very first music awards show. Behind it had some very interesting and exciting events – such as live music videos. I so excited for this! A YouTube award show! How cool! I sat excitedly behind my computer screen watching the viewer number increase. And then it started.

It was such a major let down, to say the least. The hosts were incredibly bland and boring – they should’ve had a script. Lady Gaga’s performance was sub-par and she looked like a mess the entire song. It felt like we were watching a cheap and clumsy version of the Nick Choice Awards – all we needed was green slime.

The whole production was sloppy and it physically hurt to watch the hosts try to be funny. Speaking of being funny – the lead singer for Arcade Fire tried to pull a spoof of the Kayne-Taylor joke when T-swift won video of the year. (I’m still puzzled by how Trouble beat out BOTH Harlem Shake and Gangnam Style for YouTube Phenomenon…)

Oh and want to know how many YouTube based nominees there were? Not even half. Want to know how many won? Just two.  Destorm (The hosts didn’t even say it right!! Know your Youtubers guys!) and Lindsey Sterling definitely deserved it! But for a show centered on YouTube the producers seemed to miss that this should include the community that YouTube envelops.

Did I mention they bleeped out half of one performance? Yeah. That happened. So did a choose-your-own-adventure skit where the audience choose a double suicide. Awesome, ‘cause that’s always funny.

It was shoddy work to say the least and I am not okay with how it turned out. There were YouTubers who tweeted @YouTube with how upset they were with it. I felt like I was at a Junior High Dance....

  1. As cringey as Win Butler is, I still love Arcade Fire.
